Pavilion Construction Completed

The Timber Framers Guild began their 2005 project in Angola on June 12th and was completed on June 25th.

A wonderful event took place for Angola this summer! The Timber Framers Guild chose to do their 2005 project in Angola. The Timber Framers Guild is a worldwide organization that specializes in building wooden structures using 19 th century techniques. The Guild brought in 75 to 100 people to construct the Selman Timber Frame Pavilion in Commons Park. Many local organizations volunteered to help with providing meals, and Tri-State University donated the use of its dormitories.

The idea of constructing a timber frame building began in 1998, when the late Mayor Bill Selman visited a Guild project site. At the time, our community had just completed construction of Friendship Park Playground, a project that proved the people in our area were, indeed, willing to give of themselves. Mayor Selman felt that a timber frame project would, once again, promote community involvement and provide the people of Steuben County a great place to hold reunions, company picnics and special events. Mayor Selman felt so strongly about this idea, that he requested a memorial fund be created upon his death, to help pay for the project.

The Angola Parks and Recreation Department has continued to raise funds for the construction of the 45' X 100' pavilion, in honor of Mayor Bill Selman. With the original $18,000 from the Selman Memorial Fund, and monies from the park department's non-reverting fund, the project now has nearly $200,000.

We are asking for financial help to finish paying for the project. We believe that an additional $50,000 will be needed to complete the entire project, including the purchase of light poles for the area, as well as incidental construction expenses.

If you would like to help, please call or e-mail the Angola Parks Department at 260.665.1588 or parks@angolain.org
