Downtown Angola

Angola was platted in 1838 and then incorporated as a town on Oct. 1, 1866 and as a city in 1906.  It's downtown, the heart of the city, has been a thriving hub of activity for over 150 years and is the county seat of Steuben County.  Downtown Angola's Commercial Historic District was included on the list of the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, with 44 structures.  The historic downtown is flanked by Cameron Memorial Community Hospital to the East and Trine University to the West.  Historic tours are given by the Historic Preservation Commission.  The Commission is in charge of helping to maintain the historic integrity of the City's historically designated areas.

Downtown Angola has gone through a transformation in the last few years, with new sidewalks and planters constructed in 2010 on the Public Square and in 2014 on W. Maumee.

Soldiers' Monument, which stands in the center of the Public Square, was erected in 1917.  2017 celebrates is 100th year as a memorial to those that fought in this country's Civil War and as a symbol of our city and county's devotion to this indivisible nation and all of its people. The mound, the land on which Soldiers' Monument stands, was renovated in 2015.

We welcome you to experience and enjoy our downtown - home to friendly and welcoming local specialty shops, coffee shops, and restaurants.
