Preparing for a honey bee emergency

Angola firefighter / paramedic and bee keeper Rodney Snyder instructed AFD members on responding to honey bee emergencies tonight.  The backyard bee keeping hobby is gaining interest and we need to be aware of medical conditions that can be caused by one or more honey bee stings and how to treat victims of bee stings.  Snyder also taught the department how to protect ourselves from swarming bees while performing a rescue.  If you are stung by a be and experience difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, rash or hives seek medical attention immediately.  Should you come across a bee hive that is a nuisance contact the Steuben County Extension Office at 260-668-1000 ext. 1400.  Snyder has been a firefighter since 1981 and a bee keeper since 1991.
