  • 202 W. Gilmore - Edwin W. Selman Public Safety Bldg.
Constructed in c. 1939 as the offices for the city of Angola, today the building serves as the Angola Public Safety Building. The building was constructed in a simplified Art Deco style. Its two story massing is clad in a distinctive orange brick in a running bond coursework with limestone accents. The horizontal emphasis of its design is reinforced with a limestone band running along the tops of the second floor windows, below the bottoms of the second floor windows as well as the parapet cap. The upper band is differentiated in the center bay with incised linear carvings. The lower band is not present in the middle bay and also contains a soldier course of brick immediately beneath punctuated by small limestone squares at each bay step back. The first floor windows are capped with a brick solider course with a limestone keystone. The symmetrical façade is broken into four bays each stepped back slightly from the previous bay with the central bay standing closest to the street and the rest stepping back. The center bay serves as the building’s main entrance. At the parapet of the center bay, art deco influenced limestone circular medallions flank a projecting applied limestone finial in the art deco style. The main entrance is raised above grade by three steps. The entrance has a limestone surround capped with a simple crown molded top accented with dentils. The words “City of Angola” are inscribed above the door with gothic style sconces flanking each side. The central entry door has been replaced with a dark brown aluminum unit. A limestone base is present along thee base of the building. All the windows have been replaced with double hung aluminum sash with applied mullions. The original central rectangular plan of the building has been added onto in c. 1960 with the addition of two sets of double wide overhead doors. A second addition was added in c. 2000 adding additional office space and additional bays for fire apparatus. Both additions have employed the use of similar orange colored brick and limestone accents with low sloped roofs hidden behind a parapet. The building has a low sloping roof which is not visible from the street hidden behind the parapet. It is recommended that the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation be adopted as the guidelines for the review of exterior changes to the building.
