Water Department

The Angola Water Treatment Plant acquired by the City in 1921 was originally a private owned steam plant that started in 1885 at the 210 W. Mill St. site. Plant improvements and several expansion projects have brought about the present facilities which include, aeration, filtration, ion exchange softening, chlorination and fluoridation. Total capacity is 1.728 MGD. In 1989 a second treatment plant was completed and put in service at the 550 Pokagon Trail site. This treatment plant utilizes the same methods of treatment. Total capacity is 1.728 MGD. The City of Angola Water Works is responsible for providing safe reliable and sustainable drinking water and managing drinking water production, storage and distribution facilities for its present and future customers.

Steps Of Our Water Treatment

  1. Aeration: This process is applied in which water is brought into contact with air for the purpose of changing the concentration of volatile substances contained in the water, which is useful in the improvement of taste and order and for the oxidation of iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and to a limited extent organic matter.
  2. Filtration: Iron and manganese removal.
  3. Ion Exchange Softening: The calcium and magnesium in the hard water are replaced by sodium from the exchanger.
  4. Disinfection: A small amount of chlorine is added to kill any harmful bacteria or microorganisms that may be in the water.
  5. Fluoridation: Fluoride is added to a recommended optimum concentration of 0.7 mg/l for the prevention of dental decay.
  6. Storage: Fire protection and peak demand.

The Angola Water Works provides drinking water to more than 9,340 people and four storage tanks. The distribution system consists of approximately 75 miles of water mains ranging in size from 2" - 12" in diameter.

Water department staff continuously monitor the treated water supply at water taps throughout the distribution system. Chemical tests on samples are run daily to allow for appropriate adjustments to the treatment process when needed. Bacteriological tests are run weekly to ensure that the water is safe for consumption. All monitoring is done in compliance with the Indiana Department Of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.

The entire water supply system is monitored with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) distribution control system software. The SCADA system allows operators to control operations at both treatment plants and throughout the distribution system.

The City of Angola's drinking water comes from ground water and is supplied by ten wells ranging from 80' to 244' in depth.

The management of the municipal Water Works is under the direction of a five-member Common Council and a three member Board of Public Works. Day-to-day operations of the Water Works are the responsibility of the superintendent. The Water Department consists of seven full time employees that are certified to operate our class DSM distribution system and class WT3 treatment plant.
